LAPWAI, ID – The Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday requested the assistance of Nez Perce Tribe Police in locating a suspect who fled on foot during a traffic stop on Highway 95 north of Spalding.
According to Nez Perce Tribe Police, law enforcement established a perimeter to contain the suspect, Paul Penney, and utilized the Nez Perce Tribal Police Department’s drone to aid in the capture. After approximately 20 minutes of flight time, the drone’s thermal imaging capabilities detected Penney hiding near the riverbank in complete darkness. Penney’s location was relayed to units on the ground and a custody team approached and apprehended Penney on a felony arrest warrant without incident.
Court records show that an arrest warrant was issued after Penney failed to appear in Nez Perce County Court in January of 2024. In the case, Penney is charged with felony possession of a controlled substance.
“This successful operation underscores our commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology and rigorous training to enhance public safety. Continuous investment in advanced tools and comprehensive officer training ensures we are well-prepared to apprehend those who pose a threat to our community,” says a release from Nez Perce Tribe Police.
