KENNEWICK, WA – A fatal traffic collision occurred on the evening of March 1, 2025, on State Route 224 near milepost 1, approximately one mile east of Benton City. The crash, reported at 8:04 p.m., involved two vehicles traveling in opposite directions.
According to initial reports, a white 2013 GMC Sierra, driven by 32-year-old Matthew D. Mason of Benton City, was traveling westbound when it crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound 2008 Acura TSX, driven by 35-year-old Antonio D. Aguirre of Sunnyside. The impact caused Mason’s vehicle to roll, leaving one person injured and another deceased.
Emergency responders transported Mason to Kadlec Regional Medical Center for treatment. He was reported to have been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Charges against him are currently pending as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision.
Tragically, Aguirre was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials confirmed that he was also wearing a seatbelt. Next-of-kin notification was completed by Troopers D. Thomas and M. Parham.
Both vehicles sustained severe damage and were towed from the scene by Bullpen. The Washington State Patrol has yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
