SPOKANE, WA – Spokane Valley deputies and firefighters responded to a report of a 1-year-old male who had reportedly overdosed on fentanyl on the morning of March 5. According to authorities, the caller had administered two doses of Narcan (Naloxone), but the child remained unresponsive. Under the guidance of a Spokane Regional Emergency Communications (SREC) 911 dispatcher, the caller performed CPR, and the child regained consciousness.

Emergency personnel arrived at the residence in the 11200 block of E. 10th Avenue and found the child breathing and crying. Spokane Valley firefighters took over medical care before AMR transported him to a hospital, where he was expected to recover.

Investigators determined that the child had come into contact with drug paraphernalia used by his mother the night before. The mother, identified as 35-year-old Samantha J. Anderson, told deputies she had smoked fentanyl on March 4 and placed the used foil in her purse. The next morning, she saw her son in the living room near her purse and initially believed he was sucking on his thumb. A few minutes later, she noticed he was unresponsive and turning blue, with the used foil on the floor next to him.

Anderson administered two doses of Narcan and started CPR. The child’s aunt arrived upstairs, saw the child turning blue, and called 911 while continuing CPR under dispatcher instructions. The child soon started breathing on his own before first responders arrived.

Following the investigation, deputies arrested Anderson and booked her into the Spokane County Jail for reckless endangerment (DV). Child Protective Services and the child’s father, who does not reside in Spokane, were notified of the incident.
