Washington Man Flees Scene After Fatal I-5 Crash—SUV Plummets Off Overpass, Killing One

SEATTLE, WA – A devastating crash on northbound I-5 near SR 599 yesterday morning left one person dead, multiple others injured, and the driver in police custody after attempting to flee the scene.

At approximately 10:15 AM on March 7, 2025, Washington State Patrol (WSP) received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a severe collision. Investigators determined that a black 2013 Toyota Highlander was traveling on the ramp from northbound I-5 to northbound SR 599 when it struck the right-side barrier, veered left, and plunged off the overpass onto I-5 below.

During the crash, one occupant was ejected onto the ramp before the vehicle fell. Another occupant was thrown from the SUV after it went over the side and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant was rushed to Harborview Medical Center with serious injuries.

Once the Highlander landed on I-5, three additional vehicles were involved in a secondary collision, resulting in injuries to multiple individuals, some of whom were transported to the hospital.

Shockingly, the occupant who was ejected onto the overpass fled the scene on foot but was quickly detained by a state trooper. Authorities identified him as the driver, 30-year-old Daud S. Mohamud of Auburn, Washington. He was taken into custody and charged with Felony Hit and Run – Death and Felony Hit and Run – Serious Injury.

After receiving medical clearance at Harborview, Mohamud was booked into King County Jail.

Detectives are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant dashcam footage to come forward as the investigation continues.
