LEWISTON, ID – The Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning regarding a scam call in which an individual falsely claimed to be a member of the department. According to a press release issued on March 12, a citizen received a call from someone who identified themselves as “Sgt. Wilson” from the warrant division. The caller claimed to be reaching out regarding an important legal matter and requested a call back.
The sheriff’s office clarified that it does not have a warrant division, nor does a Sgt. Wilson work for the department. Officials also warned that since it is still tax season, scam activity may increase. Scammers often use phone number spoofing to make it appear as though the call is coming from a legitimate law enforcement office.
Authorities emphasized that the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office, along with other law enforcement agencies, will never call individuals to inform them of a warrant. Additionally, they will never request payment via gift cards, cryptocurrency, or similar methods.
The sheriff’s office urges residents to remain cautious and avoid falling victim to such scams.
