WALLACE, ID – The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office has issued a statement addressing community concerns regarding the death of an inmate, Mr. Galloway, in the Shoshone County Jail in November 2024. The statement comes in response to social media discussions and calls for public records requests related to the incident.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Mr. Galloway was pronounced dead on November 7, 2024, at approximately 3:24 p.m. He was being transported from the jail to a hospital for a suspected spinal or back injury when he suffered a medical emergency. Jail staff and paramedics attempted CPR for approximately 45 minutes, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
An autopsy determined that Mr. Galloway’s cause of death was a pulmonary thromboembolism, with contributing factors including severe obesity and methamphetamine toxicity. The Sheriff’s Office refuted claims circulating on social media that he was left untreated for an extended period, stating that he was in custody for only two days and had been evaluated by the jail’s contracted medical staff.
Following the death, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office conducted an independent investigation, which did not find criminal liability among the personnel involved. Additionally, the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office conducted an internal review, leading to planned policy changes aimed at improving emergency response procedures and staffing levels within the jail.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized its commitment to reviewing and refining policies to align with best practices while also urging the public to respect the privacy of Mr. Galloway and his family.
