LEWISTON, ID – The Idaho State Police have announced Mike Mooney’s promotion from Lieutenant to Captain and will oversee central Idaho’s District 2 operations, based in Lewiston. Mooney succeeds Captain Rich Adamson, who retires after a distinguished law enforcement career.

According to ISP, Mooney brings a wealth of experience to his new role, with 25 years in law enforcement. He said, “I am honored to be entrusted with a District Captain role at ISP and am committed to continuing the legacy of excellence set by Captain Adamson.” Captain Mooney’s career began with the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police Department, followed by service with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon. In October 2001, he joined ISP, where he has built an exceptional career. After graduating from the ISP Advanced Training Academy, Captain Mooney served as a Patrol Trooper in District 1 (Coeur d’Alene) for three years before transferring to District 2 (Lewiston). There, he spent 15 years in investigations, rising through the ranks as a detective, Detective Sergeant, and Investigations Lieutenant—a position he has held since 2019. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership from the American Military University in 2022.

“I am excited to promote Captain Mooney into this leadership position,” said Colonel Bill Gardiner, ISP Director. “His deep knowledge of central Idaho, extensive investigative experience, and dedication to public safety make him the ideal leader for the region. I look forward to the positive impact he will continue to have on our troopers and the communities ISP serves.”

Mooney assumes leadership with the retirement of Adamson, who has decades of experience in both law enforcement and military service. Adamson began his career in the U.S. Air Force in 1991, serving in Turkey and New Mexico before transitioning to public safety. He served with the Twin Falls County and Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Offices before joining ISP in 2001. Over the years, he excelled in various leadership roles. He remained committed to excellence, which was reflected in his completion of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and his summa cum laude degree from Lewis-Clark State College.

“Captain Adamson has been a steadfast leader and dedicated public servant,” said Colonel Gardiner. “His leadership, mentorship, and commitment to the citizens of Idaho will leave a lasting legacy. We are grateful for his service and wish him the best in retirement.”
