Boxing Legend George Foreman Dies at 76

TEXAS – Two-time heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman has died at the age of 76.

Foreman died peacefully Friday, surrounded by family, according to a statement on his Instagram account.  The cause of death was not immediately released.

“Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose,” says the statement.  “A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two time heavyweight champion of the world, He was deeply respected — a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name— for his family.”

At just 19 years old, Foreman won a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. He then went pro and won 37 consecutive matches. He only lost five times in his entire career.  He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003.

In 1974, Foreman faced Muhammad Ali in the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” match. Foreman lost the fight. He retired from the sport in 1977, but would make a comeback at the age of 45 and reclaim the heavyweight title by defeating Michael Moorer in 1994.  That victory would make him the oldest heavyweight champion in history. He retired from the sport for good in 1997.

Foreman was also a successful entrepreneur, known for the George Foreman Grill, which reportedly sold over 100 million units.

Foreman was married and had 12 children — five of them boys, all named George.
