LEWISTON, ID – One stroke separates Lucas Ortega and Alex Navarro at the top of the individual leaderboard at the Warrior Spring Classic, and the LC State men lead as a team heading into Tuesday’s final round. The Warriors hold a commanding 17-stroke lead overall.
“The men really shined today, led by Lucas’ breakout first round of 65,” coach Zach Anderson said. “He got off to a hot start and didn’t look back. Very proud of him and the way he is trending. He and Alex led us in a hard fought first and second round. From top to bottom we had a lot of good things going. The job isn’t finished, still work to be done tomorrow.”
Ortega played the best round of his career and was 7-under, 65 after the first 18 holes. The freshman birded his first three holes and five of the first seven. He ended his round with eight birdies. He followed the first round up with a 1-under, 71 in the second to sit 8-under overall and one stroke ahead of teammate Navarro.
Senior Navarro had a strong showing in his first round and was 4-under, 68 after his first 18 holes. He tallied three birdies and an eagle all on the back nine. He carded a 3-under, 69 in the second set of 18 holes with four birdies to move into second place in the field.
Oscar Behle played an even-par first round to start his day and followed with a matching round of 72 in the second. The even-par day has the senior in a tie for seventh.
Luke West was 9-over in his first round and bounced back extremely well with a 2-under, 70 in the second round with four birdies. The strong showing in round two moved the sophomore into a tie for 18th.
Owen Pearson was 6-over in the first round and shaved three strokes off his second with a 3-over, 75. He is tied for 24th.
LC State fielded a B team that featured Sondre Andresen, Jaxon Moon, Kye Krall and Hunter Millsap, and the group impressed. After two rounds of play the second Warrior team is in third place at 14-over with a two-stroke lead over fourth place.
Andresen and Moon each carded a 1-over, 73 in their first rounds and Krall was 4-over, 76. Millsap was 5-over, 77 after his first 18 holes.
Andresen got even better in the second round with an impressive 4-under, 68. He birdied eight holes to climb to fourth place overall. Moon matched his first round with another 73 and holds sole possession of 10th place.
Krall and Millsap each shot 3-over, 75 in the second round with four birdies each. Krall is tied for 18th and Millsap is tied for 22nd.
