Idaho State Police Announces Changes to Medical Certificate Rules for Commercial Drivers

MERIDIAN, ID – The Idaho State Police (ISP) Commercial Vehicle Safety division has announced upcoming changes to the Out-of-Service (OOS) criteria related to medical certificates for commercial drivers. The updated rules go into effect on April 1, 2025.

Currently, drivers are only placed out of service if they lack a valid medical certificate and have a history of non-compliance. Under the new rule, drivers operating passenger or property-carrying commercial vehicles will be placed out of service on the first offense if they do not have a valid medical certificate in their possession or on file with the state’s licensing agency when required.

Drivers may present their medical certificate either physically or electronically, such as via a photo or email. Those who do not require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) but are still required to carry a medical certificate must have it on hand, as the state does not retain these records for non-CDL holders.

ISP encourages drivers to carry a physical or clearly legible digital copy to ensure compliance and avoid potential roadside violations.

“Drivers should take proactive steps to ensure they have their valid medical certificate readily available to prevent potential roadside violations,” said Captain Jason Bailey of the CVS Division.

Drivers with questions are advised to contact their local ISP Specialist.
