Idaho’s Corporal Gurney Named Runner-up for International Trooper of the Year Award

MERIDIAN, ID – The Idaho State Police has announced that Corporal Travis Gurney was named a runner-up for the highly esteemed 2024 IACP/Motorola Solutions Trooper of the Year Award. “This prestigious recognition, presented by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and Motorola Solutions, is a testament to the bravery, leadership, and professionalism that state troopers and provincial police officers exhibit in the line of duty,” says an Idaho State Police press release.

Gurney, representing the Mountain Pacific Region, was nominated for his courageous actions on January 4, 2024, when he risked his life to prevent a catastrophic wrong-way collision on Interstate 86. According to Idaho State Police, during a high-speed pursuit involving a suspect driving against traffic, Corporal Gurney strategically positioned his patrol vehicle to intercept the suspect, absorbing the impact and ultimately preventing what could have been a multiple-fatality crash. His swift and brave actions saved lives and prevented a tragedy. Despite the significant damage to his car, he exited and assisted in the suspect’s apprehension.

“I’m a firm believer that when you stop celebrating heroes, you stop having heroes,” said Colonel Gardiner. “While Corporal Gurney may humbly say he’s no hero, I can tell you that he was a hero that day to the people whose lives he impacted.”

The IACP honored Corporal Gurney and three other regional finalists at the annual IACP Division Midyear Meeting, where the 2024 IACP/Motorola Solutions Trooper of the Year was announced.

“ISP is immensely proud to see Corporal Gurney recognized at this level. His dedication to serving exemplifies our values, and we extend heartfelt gratitude to the IACP and Motorola Solutions for celebrating the sacrifice and service of troopers across the country,” says the release.
