BEAVERTON, OR – A second suspect in the March 21 murder of a 14-year-old boy in Moses Lake has been arrested, according to law enforcement. Authorities confirmed that Mathew Valdez, 18, was taken into custody early Friday morning in Beaverton, Oregon, with the help of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals.
The arrest marks a significant development in the investigation, which has spanned multiple states. Valdez and 20-year-old Jose Beltran-Rodriguez, both of Moses Lake, were identified earlier this week as suspects in the deadly shooting that occurred on Loop Drive. Alongside the 14-year-old victim who died, four others were shot—two 17-year-olds, a 12-year-old, and a 26-year-old woman. All four survivors were treated and later released from the hospital.
The 26-year-old, Crystal Santoyo of Moses Lake, was identified as the driver of the vehicle that was targeted in the shooting. Santoyo is engaged to Moses Lake Police Department detective Juan Serrato.
A 14-year-old suspect was already arrested Tuesday in the Tri-Cities area. All three suspects face charges of first-degree murder, five counts of first-degree assault, drive-by shooting, and felon in possession of a firearm.
Law enforcement activity continued Friday afternoon when U.S. Marshals conducted a high-risk stop on the Alder Fill near Broadway, briefly causing a traffic backup. Authorities detained three individuals for questioning in connection to the case. One of the individuals was reportedly wanted for rendering criminal assistance.
The search remains active for Beltran-Rodriguez. The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. Tips can be submitted by calling 1-800-336-0102 or online at www.usmarshals.gov/tips.
