Washington WIC Launches Online Ordering Pilot Program with Walmart

OLYMPIA, WA – Families enrolled in Washington’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program now have a new way to access healthy food: online ordering through Walmart. The state has been selected as one of just 11 in the country to participate in a pilot program testing WIC-approved purchases online, and one of only two states working directly with Walmart.

Through the pilot, WIC recipients can use their benefits for pickup, delivery, or shipping from 67 Walmart stores across Washington. The program is funded by a grant from the Center for Nutrition & Health Impact and aims to increase accessibility for families who may have difficulty traveling to stores or finding eligible items nearby.

Brittany Tybo, Director of Washington WIC, said the pilot helps eliminate barriers many families face. “By innovating to provide delivery, shipping, and pickup options, we remove barriers and ensure families can easily access the healthy foods they need in a way that makes sense for them,” Tybo said.

Participants can shop for items like infant formula, eggs, and produce by adding their WIC card to a free Walmart account at www.walmart.com/WIC or using the Walmart app. Eligible items are clearly marked to simplify shopping, and if local stores are out of stock, items can be shipped from other locations.

Ryland Allen, Walmart’s Vice President of Baby Merchandising, said the company’s multi-channel model is designed to improve access. “Walmart’s multi-channel capabilities provide customers with a seamless shopping experience… to help increase access to healthy foods,” he said.

The pilot runs through the end of 2025. If successful, Washington WIC plans to expand online ordering options to additional retailers following an evaluation.

Washington WIC currently serves more than 205,000 people through over 200 clinics across the state, providing nutrition education, health screenings, breastfeeding support, and access to healthy food for pregnant people, new parents, infants, and young children.

To apply for WIC, Washington families can contact their local WIC clinic, submit a WIC interest form, and learn more about eligibility online.
