Mock Emergency Drill at University of Idaho Set for April 10

Moscow CampusLaw enforcement, fire and EMS to participate in active assailant simulation

MOSCOW, ID — Emergency crews will take part in a full-scale active assailant drill at the University of Idaho campus on Thursday, April 10. The simulation will run from 1 to 4 p.m. and is designed to strengthen coordination between university leadership and local first responders.

The exercise is part of the university’s Emergency Response Plan and will involve the University of Idaho, Moscow Police Department, Moscow Volunteer Fire Department, and the Latah County Sheriff’s Office. Officials say the training aims to ensure readiness in the event of an actual emergency on campus.

The public is being asked to avoid the area surrounding Memorial Gym during the drill. Rayburn Street will be closed between Sixth Street and Nez Perce Drive, and the perimeter will be marked off with barriers and tape. Security will be present to monitor access.

As part of the drill, law enforcement and emergency responders will enter the building as though reacting to a real-time threat. Community members may see actors portraying victims, emergency personnel carrying firearms, hear simulated gunfire, and see ambulances and other emergency vehicles in operation. Organizers emphasize that all scenarios are staged for training purposes.

Media interactions during the event will also be treated as if it were an actual emergency, giving campus officials and responders a chance to practice their communication procedures under pressure.
