Men’s Track and Field Hits National Standards in Javelin and 4x400m Relay in Spokane

SPOKANE, WA – LC State Men’s Track and Field wrapped up the Whitworth Peace meet with a pair of national standards on Friday. Perry Severijnse continued his debut season with an impressive javelin throw, while the 4x400m relay squad shattered the program record with its national mark.

 

“Really pleased with today’s performances,” coach Mike Collins said. “Lots of season PRs and three national standards; definitely moving forward which is what we want to see this time of year. The weather was really cooperative and hopefully we will continue to see more of that too. Great attitudes as we head into the core of our season.”

 

Severijnse hit his first national standard and surpassed his previous best by more than three meters. He threw his javelin 61.16m, the second-best in school history, for a B standard that currently ranks seventh in the NAIA. He placed third with Caleb Sprenger in ninth (52.34m).

 

The men’s 4x400m relay squad of Jordan Castillo, Trenton Johnson, London Kirk and Preston Cooper shattered the previous school record by nearly two seconds and ran a B standard time to finish second in the field. The group ran a time of 3:15.95 which ranks seventh in the NAIA. The B team of Kobe Wessels, Tristin O’Brien, Clay Shumaker and Griffen Parsells placed 16th (3:36.62).

 

Kirk led the Warriors in the 400m individually with a time of 48.43 to place third. Johnson ran the second-best time in program history to finish ninth with at time of 49.85. Castillo led LC State in the 100m and 200m. He was 14th in the 200m (11.13), Cooper was 17th (11.18), Severijnse placed 43rd (11.95) and Brandon Decker finished 46th (12.32). Johnson was also in action in the triple jump where he finished third (13.89m).

 

Castillo ran the fourth-fastest 200m in LC State history with a time of 22.04 to place eighth. Cooper was 16th (22.49), James Bogdanowicz was 28th (23.29) and Max Funk finished 48th (25.23). Bogdanowicz went on to place seventh in the pole vault and tied his career-best at 4.42m, while Decker was 16th (3.82m). Funk competed in the long jump where he leapt a PR of 5.80m to place 22nd.

 

Parsells ran the third-fastest 1,500m in program history and placed fourth with a time of 3:52.49. Wessels also ran a personal best to finish seventh (3:54.17). O’Brien was 46th (4:13.99), Shumaker was 54th (4:20.29) and Jace Joslyn ran a PR of 4:54.51 to place 63rd. Parsells was fourth in the 800m (1:53.55) and Wessels was 36th (2:00.77).

 

Keith Uitdewilligen ran a personal-best time of 9:50.22 in the 3,000m steeplechase to better his fifth-best time in school history. Uitdewilligen placed 12th, Ben Vernon was 21st (10:30.19) and Manuel Valdez placed 22nd (10:44.16). Jacob Adams was 14th in the 10,000m (36:57.89). Alexander Fry was 38th in the 5,000m (16:40.38).

 

Both Ian Gardom and Cameron Carrara ran career-best times in the 110m hurdles. Gardom clocked in at 15.75 to place 12th and Carrara ran a time of 17.31 to finish 21st. Both were in action in the high jump where Gardom placed 17th (1.76m) and Carrara was 19th with a PR (1.71m).

 

Jr Mendoza was the top Warrior in the shot put with a mark of 13.06m to place 24th. Sam Weller was 26th (12.95m). Weller led the group in the hammer throw in 13th place (40.18m). Mendoza threw a PR (37.78m) to finish 18th and Tanner Beltz-Childs was 19th (37.66m).
