The Idaho Children’s Trust Fund selects recipients of the Champion for Children Award based on consistent, professional, and personal contributions toward strengthening families and preventing child abuse and neglect. Director Roger Sherman emphasized the importance of prevention-focused work.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, and every family deserves the support to build a strong foundation,” Sherman said. “This April, we celebrate the power of prevention and the community partners, like UYLC, that make it possible.”

Founded in 2007, UYLC has grown into a vital part of the Kamiah community, providing youth-centered services and safe spaces such as the Kamiah Teen Center. The center offers homework assistance, life skills training, and recreational activities, aiming to support healthy development and leadership in young people.

UYLC’s Youth Advisory Board (YAB) also plays an active role in the organization’s direction and programs. One of the board’s most notable projects includes the development of the Kamiah Skate Park, a youth-led initiative that became a symbol of community collaboration and empowerment.

With 25 staff members and multiple facilities now under its operation, UYLC continues to expand its reach through prevention programs, substance use education, and community engagement efforts.

Executive Director Sharlene Johnson called the award an honor and credited the organization’s progress to the dedication of its staff, youth participants, and supporters.

“Together, we have built a community where young leaders thrive and drive meaningful change,” Johnson said. “We remain committed to empowering youth and fostering a future where every child feels safe, supported, and valued.”
