OLYMPIA, WA – The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will distribute 15 surplus wildfire engines to fire districts in wildfire-prone rural areas this spring. The move is part of DNR’s ongoing effort to support local fire response capabilities in high-risk regions.

According to DNR, the engines are being provided through the agency’s Fire District Assistance Programs, which allow eligible districts to obtain wildfire-specific equipment at no cost. A 2017 authorization from the state Legislature permits DNR to transfer surplus wildfire engines to qualifying districts.

“Local fire districts are a critical first line of defense against wildfire,” said George Geissler, DNR’s State Forester and Deputy Supervisor for Wildland Fire Management. “They’re an invaluable initial attack resource, able to reach ignitions early and keep them small.”

In addition to the surplus engine transfers, DNR facilitates the Federal Excess Property Program, which provides Forest Service equipment to local fire districts on loan. Through House Bill 1168 funding, DNR modifies this equipment to meet the specific needs of each department.
