WSU Fraternity Shut Down for 5 Years Over Hazing; Another Sanctioned After Chaining Doors Shut During Party

According to a new post on the WSU website the Alpha Sigma Phi house has lost recognition until May of 2030.  WSU investigators determined the fraternity coerced new members to consume marijuana and alcohol and punished them with cleaning duties and physical activities.  The hazing took place during the last three fall semesters and the spring semester last year.  The investigation into the Alpha Sigma Phi hazing began last winter.  The house was suspended from all activities in January when the investigation began.  The same WSU fraternity was sanctioned in 2020 for hazing, alcohol and drug violations.

Sorority WSUThe WSU webpage also notes that the Sigma Chi fraternity is on social probation for reckless endangerment.  The front doors to the house were chained shut during a social event on January 31st which prevented a safe and timely exit in case of an emergency.  The Sigma Chi house must also undergo fire code and safety training from the Pullman Fire Department.  The same fraternity was sanctioned in the fall of 2023 for furnishing alcohol to minors.

A new investigation is underway involving the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at WSU.  According to the online post the house is being investigated for hazing, alcohol and physical harm or threat violations from October.  The same house was put on disciplinary probation for furnishing alcohol to minors in the fall of 2023.

WSU is required by state law to publicly report violation allegations on Greek Row.  The requirement is part of “Sam’s Law” which was crafted after the death of WSU student Sam Martinez who died in 2019 of alcohol poisoning following an Alpha Tau Omega party.
