ST. MARIES, ID – The St. Maries School District in north Idaho has approved a new policy that would permit teachers and school staff to carry concealed firearms on campus. The school board approved the policy on Monday.

Supporters of the St. Maries policy argue that trained and armed educators could serve as a line of defense in the event of a school shooting, potentially saving lives before law enforcement arrives. Critics, including some education groups and safety advocates, caution that the presence of more firearms in schools could lead to unintended consequences, including accidental discharges or increased risk during disciplinary situations.

The policy will go into effect at the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year.

Idaho law prohibits possession of firearms for most persons on school grounds.  Those with enhanced conceal carry permits and the approval of the associated school board are among those who are permitted to carry concealed firearms.
