COEUR D’ALENE, ID – A 52-year-old man from Coeur d’Alene has been sentenced to 15 years in prison following his conviction for attempting to exploit a minor through the production and promotion of explicit material.
Jason Wilburn Kimmel was convicted of Attempted Sexual Exploitation of a Child, a felony offense that carries a maximum sentence of 15 years under Idaho law.
The conviction stems from an incident on November 29, 2024, when a 16-year-old discovered a concealed recording device, designed to resemble a pen, in a bathroom. After locating a memory card inside the device and reviewing its contents, the teen found videos of herself, including footage captured while she was entering and exiting the shower. One of the recordings showed Kimmel setting up the hidden device.
Upon leaving the premises with the device, the teen was contacted by Kimmel via text and phone calls. Instead of responding, she informed a trusted adult and contacted law enforcement.
Kimmel was sentenced on April 22, 2025, by District Judge Barbara Duggan. The court imposed a 15-year sentence with parole eligibility after seven and a half years. Kimmel will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Shannon Jackson had recommended a 15-year sentence with eligibility for parole after 10 years. The case was prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys Molly Nivison and Shannon Jackson.
Prosecuting Attorney Stanley T. Mortensen thanked the Coeur d’Alene Police Department for their investigative work on the case.
