COUNCIL, ID – The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has announced that U.S. Highway 95 between New Meadows and Council will reopen Monday morning, marking the end of a nearly month-long closure caused by a major landslide.

The landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall on March 16, caused substantial damage to this critical north-south route and necessitated an emergency response. Following a partial closure, full-scale repair efforts began March 31. Monday’s reopening falls exactly four weeks from the highway’s complete shutdown.

To meet the expedited timeline, crews worked extended hours in dual shifts. “US-95 is one of Idaho’s most essential transportation routes, and from day one we knew we had to act swiftly and decisively to reopen in April,” said Dan McElhinney, ITD Chief Deputy and Chief Operations Officer. He credited the public’s patience and strong collaboration with local partners for supporting the effort.

While the highway will reopen, motorists may encounter temporary lane closures as crews finish roadside and guardrail work. Jason Brinkman, ITD District 3 Engineer, emphasized that the rapid construction was undertaken with a strong focus on quality and community support.

Travelers are advised to visit 511.idaho.gov for real-time updates as additional summer construction is planned on SH-55 once US-95 is back in service.
