LEWISTON – The No. 9 Warrior women shot nearly 50 percent from the field in Saturday’s 79-59 victory over Corban University. Callie Stevens led all scorers with 20 points on a 6-for-12 night from behind the 3-point line.
The two Warrior teams played a close first half with Corban taking an 18-16 advantage after the first 10 minutes. LC State climbed back to take a five-point lead at the half, then rolled through the final 20 minutes.
With the win, LC State is now 22-2 on the season and 17-1 in Cascade Conference play.
“We got out to a pretty good start tonight, but so did Corban,” Head Coach Brian Orr said. “I thought our defense did a fairly good job of rotating and contesting shots, but credit Corban for hitting some tough shots. Corban tried to put a lot of pressure on the ball which caused hurt our timing, but Callie came out on fire from behind the arc and Maddie Holm exploited the middle of their zone and we were able to build a lead. In the second half our defense created some more breakaway layups and when our bench came in we were able to keep the pressure on without missing a beat. This was another total team win and there’s no doubt they are always the most fun.”
The two teams traded baskets through the first quarter. Stevens scored the first nine LC State points on three 3-pointers, but Corban kept pace and led 18-16 at the end of the frame.
Maddie Holm evened the score with a jumper on the first possession of the second quarter. Holm put LC ahead for good at 7:46, and Stevens followed with a 3 to make it 25-22 30 seconds later.
Sara Muehlhausen sparked a short six-point rally, with back-to-back baskets by Holm, to grow the advantage to 31-23 by 5:43. Ellie Sander scored twice on fast breaks to give LC a 38-33 lead at the break.
The LC Warriors opened the third quarter on a big 11-point run. Sander hit a 3 to start the scoring, and Holm, Stevens and Muehlhausen added to the stretch to put LC State up 49-33 through two minutes.
A triple by Stevens sparked another rally, this time with 10 points, with contributions from Payton Hymas and Sitara Byrd. LC State led 61-45 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Byrd dropped in a layup to spark a run of nine points to give LC a 77-51 advantage with 2:13 to play. Hymas added one last bucket to seal the 79-59 win.
Stevens led all scorers with 20 points. She was 7-for-14 from the field and 6-for-12 from 3-point range while leading the team with three steals. Holm added 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds, and Byrd tallied 11 points and seven boards. Hymas led the team with a career-high five assists.
The Warriors shot .492 as a team and .417 from 3-point range. LC forced 12 turnovers and scored 22 points with those. The hosting Warriors outrebounded Corban 46-33.
Gemma LaVergne led Corban with 12 points and Holly Golenor grabbed nine rebounds.
