Warrior Men Lead in First Tournament of the Spring, Women Tied for Third – Golf

Randy Isbelle | Sports Information Intern

Henderson, Nev. – (Release from Lewis-Clark State Athletics) Lewis-Clark State Men’s Golf concluded the first day of the RMC Intercollegiate tournament at the Reflection Bay Golf Club with a 10-stroke lead. The women battled back in the second round to finish the first day in a tie for third.

“It was a grind from the first shot to the last,” LC State coach Zach Anderson said. “This course can get away from you very quick.”

The men combined for a 2-over 290 in the first round and played just as solidly with a 4-over 292 to lead The Master’s University after the first two rounds.

Senior Jorgen Lie Viken shot under par in both rounds to sit in a tie for third, five strokes behind current leader Trevor Lewis of Embry Riddle (Ariz.) who shot 8-under on the day. After shooting a 2-under 70 in round one, Viken struggled out of the gate of round two with a double bogey on No. 16, his first hole of the round. Birdies on Nos. 2, 4, 7, 10 and 14 helped Viken rebound for a score of 71.

Senior Devon Caruso finished the day 3-over and sits in a tie for eighth place. Freshman Bryden Brown had a solid even first round before carding a 79 in the second to sit in a tie for 19th. Sophomore Sondre Andresen bounced back from an 82 in the first round and shot 2-under in his second round to sit tied with junior Juan Pablo Quisoboni in 21st.

“The men played very solid and disciplined golf, took the chances where they could get them and limited the damage when they were presented with a challenge,” Anderson said. “Job is not done, still work to do tomorrow.”

The women matched scores with Embry Riddle in both rounds to sit in a tie for third place, 27-strokes behind leading British Columbia.

Junior Deana Caruso carded a 4-over 76 in her opening round, the best round on the team, and currently sits in eighth place. Senior Alexandra Schmidt sits at 19-over in 16th and junior Kyla Currie rounds out the top-20 with a 22-over day.

“The women had an up and down day but pushed through to finish the day in a tie for third,” Anderson said. “Deana led the girls with some solid golf.”

Both Warrior teams will conclude RMC Intercollegiate tournament play with the third and final round on Wednesday.
