Lewiston, ID- Every August, late into the month when the heat is at its highest and summer is in full swing, car enthusiasts from the Lewis-Clark Valley and beyond flock to Lewiston to admire the art of vehicle restoration- smooth paint finishes, redone engines, custom tailgates, and the palpable excitement in the air over learning the stories of those who have registered, or who are just there to enjoy the show.
Lee John Holmes, a longtime resident of Lewiston and this year’s recipient of the Lewiston’s Hot August Nights People’s Choice Award in the car and truck category, is no different.
With a lifelong passion for cars and motorcycles tracing back to his high school days, Holmes has dedicated decades of time and hard work to his hobby.
Born in North Hollywood, CA, he’s participated in drag races, cruises, and shows everywhere from the Palouse to Enterprise, OR. Sporting dozens of plaques, trophies, posters, and other accolades, it’s clear that his hobby has been well-received when out for show.
Having participated in Hot August Nights (LHAN) since 1995, Holmes is no stranger to registering for car shows and receiving hard-earned recognition for his work on his personal vehicle. 28 years have passed since his first entry, and he’s taken home trophies for his vehicles, including a Harley Davidson motorcycle and a 1966 Chevrolet C10 truck- adorned with a custom wooden tailgate, limited-time Heartbeat of America designs and other original features- for 23 consecutive years.
However, this is the first year he’s been honored as People’s Choice in the car and truck category, well-known as one of the most anticipated and sought-after recognitions of the event. According to Holmes, he hasn’t necessarily sought out the award, but it’s always been a nice thing to think about and consider for his countless entries over the years.
One of the biggest highlights for LHAN that keeps Holmes coming back year after year is the camaraderie with others participating in the show, and the chance to hear them tell their story about their vehicle.
“I enjoy them telling me the stories, and I get to share my story- and I get to meet and greet more people that enjoy doing the same thing that I do,” Holmes said.
As for next year, you can count on seeing Holmes in August, sporting a brand-new annual t-shirt that will feature a design of his vehicle alongside the People’s Choice motorcycle for another season of cruising, showing, and shining in downtown Lewiston.
