Fentanyl is flooding across the border into our community at an alarming rate. We have seen a major uptick in drug cases as well as overdoses. House Bill 406, which has passed the Idaho Senate/House and heading to Governor Little for approval, will give law enforcement a greater tool to combat this deadly drug. Lately, drug traffickers are bringing hundreds and thousands of fentanyl pills into our community with little recourse when they get caught. The new trafficking law will create a mandatory minimum prison sentence with a greater penalty in escalating quantities of fentanyl. When an individual is arrested with hundreds of pills, it will no longer be a possession case and will be addressed as a trafficker who is making a profit off of addiction.
“Fentanyl is killing people in our community and it is long overdue that the Idaho Legislature has addressed it. My office is looking forward to using this new statute to continue holding drug dealers accountable for their actions,” said Elected Prosecutor Justin Coleman.
