YAKIMA, WA – Authorities are investigating the death of a seven-month-old infant and the severe neglect of a two-year-old child following a welfare check early Tuesday morning.
According to the Yakima Police Department, officers responded to a residence in the 300 block of North 4th Avenue at approximately 7:24 a.m. on February 25. Upon arrival, officers received no response at the door but heard a child crying inside. Given the circumstances, they forced entry to ensure the safety of those inside.
Inside the home, officers discovered a two-year-old child in a state of severe malnutrition and a deceased infant. The two-year-old was transported by ambulance for medical treatment before being transferred to a Seattle-area hospital for further care.
Detectives from the Special Assault and Major Crimes units responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. A 20-year-old woman was taken into custody and booked into the Yakima County Jail on multiple felony charges.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the suspect’s relationship to the children or the exact charges filed. The investigation remains ongoing.
