CLARKSTON, WA – Asotin County has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Governors Highway Safety Association and the Washington Traffic Safety Commission to establish a Traffic Garden at Highland Elementary, near the Clarkston Boys & Girls Club. The initiative is part of a Youth Active Transportation Safety Program aimed at promoting traffic safety education.

A Traffic Garden is a designated space that mimics real-road conditions without motor vehicles, allowing children to practice road safety in a controlled environment. The site will include scaled-down traffic signs, crosswalks, and lanes to teach safe navigation skills.

Grant funds will be used to acquire bicycles, tricycles, helmets, and adaptive rolling equipment to ensure accessibility for all children. Additional support from the community will be needed for surveying, engineering, site preparation, painting, and signage installation.

Partners in the project include the Clarkston Police Department, Clarkston School District, Boys & Girls Club, and the Retired Teachers Association of Clarkston, Asotin-Anatone, and Pomeroy. Community members and businesses are encouraged to contribute to the effort.
