Man Arrested After Taking Vehicle From Clarkston Business, Returning It Shortly After

CLARKSTON, WA – Clarkston Police arrested a man on Thursday, March 6, for allegedly taking a vehicle without permission.

According to Clarkston Police, dispatch requested a response to Clarkston Glass at 602 Bridge St. around 6:30 a.m. for a suspicious circumstance. The business owner reported that an unknown male had driven away in a customer’s vehicle without permission. The suspect later returned with the vehicle and was reportedly screaming and jumping around in the parking lot.

According to court documents, upon arrival, police recognized the man as 38-year-old Richard Barker of Lewiston from previous law enforcement encounters. Barker, who was reportedly shirtless in 29-degree weather, displayed erratic movements and was unable to remain still. Based on his behavior, police noted that he appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine.

Representatives from the business stated that they arrived at work to find Barker sitting inside a 1998 Ford Windstar van, which had been left for a window replacement. They reported that Barker started the van using a key left in the ignition and drove away. He allegedly returned shortly after, punched the seats inside the vehicle, exited, and walked away.

Barker was detained and placed in a patrol vehicle but was unable to hold a coherent conversation, according to the police report. He was transported to the Asotin County Jail and booked on a charge of taking a motor vehicle without permission in the second degree, a Class C felony in Washington.

He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Friday. An arraignment has been set for March 17.
