Idaho Governor Declares March 16-22 as Flood Awareness Week

BOISE, ID Governor Brad Little has proclaimed March 16-22, 2025, as Idaho Flood Awareness Week, urging residents to take proactive measures against flood risks and to recognize the efforts of emergency management professionals.

Flooding remains an annual threat across the state, often intensified by natural hazards. According to the proclamation, all counties in Idaho have experienced some level of flooding in recorded history. The governor emphasized that preparedness, mitigation, and resilience planning can significantly reduce the risk of loss of life, property, and the economy.

The Idaho Silver Jackets, an interagency organization focused on flood hazard awareness, plays a key role in helping communities understand and prepare for flood-related challenges. The group promotes flood mitigation projects, insurance education, and land-use planning to minimize risks.

The proclamation highlights the role of county emergency managers, floodplain officials, and local agencies in educating residents, conducting training exercises, and implementing responsible floodplain regulations. It also encourages Idahoans to recognize the contributions of emergency responders, law enforcement, fire departments, and medical personnel in managing flood risks.

Governor Little urged all residents to use Idaho Flood Awareness Week as an opportunity to learn how to safeguard their homes and communities. He encouraged public engagement with flood preparedness resources to build resilience against potential flooding, particularly in post-wildfire conditions.

For more information on flood preparedness and available resources, residents are encouraged to consult local emergency management agencies and the Idaho Silver Jackets.
