Idaho State Police Warn of Reckless Motorcycle Riding Risks

MERIDIAN, ID – The Idaho State Police (ISP) is urging motorcyclists to ride responsibly following a high-speed incident on Fairview Avenue near North Records Avenue. On March 18, a trooper attempted a traffic stop on a motorcycle without a visible license plate. The rider, a 17-year-old male from Boise, fled at speeds reaching approximately 75 mph in a 25-mph zone. Due to public safety concerns, the trooper discontinued the pursuit. The motorcyclist crashed a short distance later and was taken into custody, facing charges of reckless driving and eluding law enforcement.

Captain Mike Winans of ISP District 3 emphasized the dangers of reckless riding. “This type of reckless riding endangers everyone on the road. The initial violation could have resulted in a simple verbal warning or an infraction, but the rider’s decision made the situation much worse,” he said.

With warmer weather approaching and an increase in motorcycle traffic expected, ISP warns that excessive speed and reckless behavior will not be tolerated. In 2024, District 3 troopers engaged in nine motorcycle pursuits, with additional incidents where riders fled but were not pursued due to safety concerns.

According to 2024 Idaho Department of Transportation (ITD) crash data, there were 295 motorcycle crashes in District 3 and the Treasure Valley, resulting in 13 fatalities and 247 injuries.

To address ongoing concerns, ISP and local law enforcement agencies will conduct targeted enforcement operations in high-crash areas and locations with frequent violations.

ISP provided safety recommendations for both motorcyclists and drivers:

  • Motorcyclists: Obey speed limits, wear protective gear, and never flee law enforcement.
  • Drivers: Check blind spots, allow extra following distance, and remain alert at intersections.

“This behavior is reckless, illegal, and incredibly dangerous,” said Captain Winans. “If you’re a motorcyclist, think twice before making a decision that could cost your life or the lives of others.”

ISP encourages the public to report reckless riding by calling *ISP (*477) from a mobile phone or 911 in an emergency.
