KAMIAH, ID — A group of Kamiah High School graduates from the class of 2018 are working to invest in the next generation of local leaders through a scholarship initiative designed to reward community impact rather than grades or financial need.

Founded in 2024, Leaders of the Valley was created by Kamiah alum Caden Massey, who identified a gap in traditional scholarship offerings for students pursuing trade schools, associate degrees, or other non-traditional education paths. Now serving as the organization’s Executive Director, Massey helps lead the nonprofit, which is fully based in Idaho and headquartered in Lewiston.
“There are so many kids who get left out of the conversation,” Massey said. “If you’re not at the top of your class or your parents make just enough to disqualify you from aid, the doors can close quickly. We started Leaders of the Valley to open those doors again—for students who give back to their communities.”
The scholarship, which awards $2,000 to one student annually, is currently available to seniors at Kamiah High School and Clearwater Valley High School. Unlike many financial awards, it does not factor in GPA, income level, or college pedigree. Instead, applicants are asked to submit an essay describing their contributions to their community and how their education will allow them to be a leader. A letter of recommendation from a community member is also required.

The inaugural scholarship was awarded last year, and the student recipient is reported to be thriving. Organizers intend to continue awarding $2,000 annually and emphasize that every dollar raised for the Kamiah and Kooskia areas stays within those communities. Massey said the program was able to launch thanks to early support from donors such as Simmons Sanitation, and that local partnerships continue to be essential.
Applications for the 2025 Leaders of the Valley Scholarship are due by 5 p.m. on April 18. Interested students can contact their school counselor or principal, or visit the organization’s website to apply online.
With plans to expand in 2026, the nonprofit is currently seeking community support to bring the scholarship to Lewiston-area high school students. Organizers also welcome interest from other Idaho communities hoping to launch similar efforts.
“If you believe your town could benefit from something like this, reach out,” Massey said. “We’re excited to grow, but we’ll always keep our roots in the Valley.”
