A portion of Stadium Way Will be Closed Due to Bridge Demolition Starting Monday

PULLMAN – A portion of Stadium Way running through the WSU Pullman campus will be closed for two weeks beginning June 13 to allow for the demolition of the pedestrian bridge connecting Troy and Wegner halls.

The entire demolition project is expected to run between June 13 and July 29, with intermittent road and lane closures to allow for the removal of approximately 420 feet of bridge, including two sections above Stadium Way and College Way.

The section of Stadium Way that’ll be closed in both directions June 13-24 is just south of College Way, between the Shock Physics Building and Wegner Hall.

Between June 27 and July 1, Stadium Way and College Way will be open to motorists, with intermittent single lane closures on Stadium Way. From July 5 until July 22, a portion of College Way north of Stadium Way will be closed to allow crews to remove the final sections of the bridge. Occasional single-lane closures on Stadium Way are also expected during this time.

Motorists and pedestrians will be directed to appropriate detours during the closure. Restoration and cleanup is expected to wrap up by July 29.

Facility Services opted to close the Troy/Wegner and Johnson Tower pedestrian bridges last summer out of an abundance of caution due to concerns about structural integrity. The potential costs to repair the Troy/Wegner bridge – estimated to be around 50 years old – as well as high ongoing maintenance costs prompted the demolition decision.

Facilities Services is working with a contractor to make repairs to the Johnson Tower pedestrian bridge and it is expected to reopen soon. University leaders are also working with transportation planning consultants on plans to improve Stadium Way for all modes of travel in the years to come.
