Balanced Attack Fuels LC State Men’s Basketball Victory Over Southern Oregon

Alisha Alexander | Assistant Athletic Director-Sports Information

LEWISTON – LC State Men’s Basketball attacked visiting Southern Oregon University from every angle on Friday to come away with a dominant 75-58 victory. The Warriors had five players score in double-digits and the defense outrebounded the Raiders 40-24.

LC State shot 57.4% from the field and held SOU to 36.5%. The Warriors had big contributions from each player that touched the floor.

“Impressive performance by our guys tonight defensively,” Head Coach Austin Johnson said. “I thought Davian (Brown) really set the tone in terms of defensive effort and a lot of it flowed from that. John (Lustig) had one of his better games which was encouraging to see. We established our inside game and were able to get out and run in transition for some easier baskets which was a huge help. Just a great team win against a good opponent. Every guy had big moments for us. We have a very short turnaround to prep for a well-rested OIT team. Excited to see how our guys respond.”

With the win, LC State improves to 10-5 overall and 8-1 in Cascade Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

It was an even battle for the first six minutes before a triple by Gorden Boykins swung the momentum to the Warriors. The guard added two more layups to give LC a 21-16 lead by the 10:36 mark. John Lustig sparked a run of nine to end the half with the Warriors in front 34-25, aided by tallies from Anthony Peoples Jr. and Davian Brown.

LC State took control of the contest with a commanding second half. After a basket by the Raiders, Brown scored back-to-back buckets to push the Warrior lead to double-digits. Two straight jumpers by Lustig had the margin at 42-30 at 14:59, and Raynor scored 11 points in a two-minute span to put the game away with LC in front 55-33 by 11:21.

The scoring stretch by Raynor saw the guard go 3-for-3 from 3-point range and 4-for-4 from the floor in total.

Hamilton accounted for a run of three points and Brown, Boykins and Lustig each scored to give the Warriors a 64-41 advantage with 6:42 to play. Raynor, Peoples Jr. and Sam Stockton combined for a 6-3 run to end the contest 75-58.

The Warriors made 31 of their 54 field goals with each player scoring in the contest. Lustig and Raynor led all scorers with 15 points, with Raynor doing so on a 6-fo-6 performance from the field while Lustig went 7-for-10.
