(Los Angeles, CA) At least 24 people have died in the Los Angeles wildfires, authorities said late Sunday, as Gov. Gavin Newsom deployed an additional 1,000 National Guard members to support the response.

The death toll grew by eight from Saturday to Sunday, with many of the dead not yet identified.

“The DME cannot confirm human remains until after the DME processes them at our facility,” the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office said.

With winds expected to pick up again, the National Weather Service issued a red flag advisory for Los Angeles and Ventura counties through Wednesday.

About 2,500 National Guard members now have been deployed by Newsom.
