Driver Escapes Car Fire with no Injuries, Firefighters Avoid Wildfire

A driver escaped injury when his car caught on fire Sunday just west of Clarkston in Whitman County.

Asotin County Firefighters responded to the car fire about 3 miles west of the Port of Wilma on Wawawai Road at about 5pm.

The first arriving fire officer reported a car fully engulfed in flames. The fire was quickly contained when the first truck arrived. Asotin County Fire responded to the fire through an auto-aid agreement with Whitman County Fire District 14.

Chief Hardin said a car fire this time of year on that road has a huge amount of potential of turning into a wildland fire.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the car and then turned the incident over to Whitman County Firefighters.

There were no reported injuries in this fire and Whitman County Deputies were investigating. The owner of the vehicle stated smoke started coming from the engine compartment and he lost power and brakes. He was able to escape the vehicle as flames erupted in the engine compartment.
