Express Fire 70% Contained

LEWISTON – The Nez Perce County Emergency Management Team reported the Express Fire was approximately 70% contained as of Monday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m.

The fire grew from 60 acres to approximately 2000 acres by 3:00 p.m on 7/18. The USFS responded with multiple fixed-wing water and fire retardant tankers and multiple helicopters with water buckets.

A four-man smokejumper crew jumped on the fire earlier in the day along with helitack crews. Nine engines from multiple agencies responded including Idaho Department of Lands Ponderosa, Maggie Creek and Craig Mountain fire protection districts, Nez Perce County Fire, Wheatland Fire, Lapwai Fire, and Nez Perce Tribe Fire. CPTPA provided and operated a bulldozer.

There are currently no further structures threatened.

Evacuation orders have been lifted and most residents returned home and the Clearwater River Casino and gas station re-opened. US95 is fully re-opened, however, there is still a one-lane section near Western States Cat due to chip sealing unrelated to the fire.

Two engines will remain on the fire through the night of 7/18, all other assets have been released.
