George Goes the Distance, Cabrera Homers Twice in Win at UBC

Alisha Alexander | LC State Assistant Athletic Director-Sports Information

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Drake George became the first LC State pitcher since 2003 to throw a complete game against UBC on the road, and he did so with the support of 14 hits from the Warrior offense. Brandon Cabrera tallied a pair of two-run homers to help No. 9 LC State Baseball defeat UBC 13-3 in the opening contest of the four-game Cascade Conference series.

The victory lifts the Warriors to 28-9 overall and 14-3 in CCC play and drops UBC to 15-6 in conference action.

Drake George’s complete game is the first by a Warrior since Trent Sellers in 2022, first against UBC since Matt Fish in 2017 and first against UBC on the road since Mark Kaiser in 2003.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Two hits and an LC State error gave UBC an early 1-0 edge in the first inning, but the Warriors responded with one in the top of the third. Bulla Ephan doubled to left and was lifted for courtesy runner Ike George. A passed ball put Ike George on third before a sacrifice fly by Magnum Hofstetter tied the game.

The Thunderbirds regained the lead in the home half of the third on a pair of hits before LC State responded in the fifth. Ephan singled up the middle for his second hit of the game and an error put two on. Carter Booth was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Nick Seamons drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. Dominic Signorelli put the Warriors on top with one swing as the fifth frame continued. The LC State leader in home runs and RBI this season gave the Warriors a 5-2 advantage with a three-run shot.

Drake George worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth and struck out two in the sixth.

LC State added on in the top of the seventh starting with back-to-back singles by Seamons and Signorelli. A fielder’s choice put Charlie Updegrave on base and drove in one before a two-run homer by Cabrera pushed the lead to 8-2.

The Warriors blew the game open in the top of the eighth inning with a five-run frame. Ike George and Booth were each hit by a pitch before an RBI-single by Seamons. Seamons stole second and a groundout by Signorelli plated a run. A base hit by Jake Gish made it 11-2 before Cabrera launched his second two-run home run of the game to send LC State into the ninth with a 13-2 lead.

Despite a run by UBC in the ninth, Drake George wrapped up his complete game with a pair of strikeouts. He finished his outing with nine strikeouts in nine innings and just one walk allowed. Two of the three runs given up were earned in his sixth win of the season.

Cabrera led the offense with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with a pair of two-run homers to account for his four RBI. Six different Warriors recorded at least two hits in the game and Signorelli also drove in four.
