Historic Happenings Once Again for LC State Track and Field

Alisha Alexander | Assistant Athletics Director-Sports Information

MOSCOW – LC State wrapped up a successful weekend on Saturday at Idaho’s Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open. The final day of competition saw six national standards and three school records fall.

“Pretty outstanding second day and overall meet,” Head Coach Mike Collins said. “I am somewhat surprised, but that is a good thing. You start to wonder after a while how long can you keep going and break records in significant numbers every single weekend. Not just personal records, but team records and national qualifying marks. Pretty proud of this group and with this really being a “rust buster” kind of weekend where we just wanted to see where we were at, the results are exciting and encouraging.”

THE WOMEN

Lewiston native Madigan Kelly bettered her LC State-record and A standard for nationals with an 8.49 final run in the 60m hurdles. She ran a time of 8:57 in the prelims, and Sara Hathaway ran a time of 9:17.

Sydnie Zywina continued her dominant weekend with a standout performance in the triple jump. One day after shattering the program record in the long jump and hitting a provisional mark for nationals, the Orofino native tied her school record in the triple jump (1.64m) for an automatic-qualifying mark. She placed fourth in the DI-heavy meet.

Sprinter Emily Collins hit a B standard in the 400m with a time of 58.13 to place eighth in the field. Macey Gunderson was 22nd (1:04.33). In the 800m, Geraldin Correa ran a B-standard time of 2:16.68 to place fourth. Kristen Thomas finished 18th (2:33.95)

Asotin’s Haylee Appleford had a big day in the shot put. The freshman threw to a distance of 11.91m for the third-best mark in program history. She was the lone athlete from her flight to advance to the final and one of two from an NAIA program.

Grace Tiegs led a group of Warriors in the 1,000m run with a second-place finish and time of 3:04.51. Brooklyn Shell was third (3:05.64), Aubree Williams placed fourth (3:07.76) and Abigail Peightal finished ninth (3:17.11).

Emberlynn Mack ran a time of 9.05 in the 60m dash.

THE MEN

Christian Bothwell wrapped up his first heptathlon of the season with a total of 4,663 points. The mark is just shy of his record set at nationals last season and has him in the top five in the NAIA in 2024. The senior ran a personal-best time of 8.91 in the 60m hurdles and finished third in the pole vault with a height of 4.12m.

Trenton Johnson continued to solidify his mark in the record book with another big leap in the triple jump. The sophomore hit a distance of 14.23m to clinch a provisional standard for nationals and better his LC State record.

Returning All-American Carter Gordon hit his qualifying time in the 600m with a mark of 1:21.38 to finish third. In the 1,000m, Cooper Carlson ran a personal-best and just missed a national standard with a time of 2:30.80. He won the race, Conner May was eighth with a PR of 2:35.68, and Tristin O’Brien placed 15th (2:45.83).

Ike Hopper, Preston Cooper, Johnson and Gordon teamed up in the 4x400m relay and finished third at the meet with a time of 3:21.62 to set the LC State record in the event.

Sophomore Sam Weller etched his name in the LC State record books with a throw of 14.24m in the shot put. The mark is fourth-best all-time by a Warrior and earned an eighth-place finish at the meet.

Four LC State sprinters saw action in the 60m dash. Jedidiah Barnaby led the group with a time of 1.99 to place ninth in the prelims. Cooper was 15th (7.11), Jordan Castillo finished 18th (7.16) and Hopper was 26th with a personal-best time of 7.43. Luke Mastroberardino competed in the 400m with a time of 54.21. He also tied his personal-best in the 60m hurdles (9.29).
