(Idaho State) Students at 150 schools across Idaho will get the chance to experience a wide variety of fresh fruit and vegetable options free of charge this school year through Idaho Department of Education-administered grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) provides funding that allows participating elementary schools to offer fresh fruit and vegetables to students during the school day. Students get the opportunity to sample healthy offerings, helping to build healthy eating habits by making these foods a regular part of their daily food choices.
Schools were awarded grants through a competitive application process. Under the National School Lunch Act, schools are prioritized for awards based on the percentage of students identified for free and reduced-cost meals. This helps to ensure that program funding benefits students who may have fewer chances to integrate fresh fruit and vegetables into their everyday diets.
The grant period runs from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025, and all grant awards are contingent on available USDA funds. These Idaho schools, arranged alphabetically by district, received Fresh Fruit and Vegetable grants for the 2024-2025 school year:
