With summer travels underway and more people out on the roadways, it’s no surprise that July is Vehicle Theft Prevention Month. According to AAA statistics, in the U.S. a car is stolen every 39 seconds and passenger cars make up 74% of cars stolen. Unfortunately, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports only about 56% of all stolen vehicles are ever recovered.
While the Idaho State Police Bureau of Criminal Identification reported motor vehicle theft has increased by more than 15.5% between 2019 and 2020, there are some things you can do to help prevent becoming a victim of automobile theft. Many insurance companies and safety organizations recommend you:
- Make sure you’ve removed your keys and your car is locked
- Park in well-lit areas
- Don’t keep a spare key in your vehicle
- Install a tracking device and anti-theft system
- Keep your valuables out of sight
- Never leave your car running unattended
- Pay attention to where you are parking
- Try to avoid higher-crime areas when possible
