KCSO Traffic Unit Responds to Fatal Vehicle Vs. Pedestrian Collision

On 9/27/23 at approximately 0745 hours, deputies with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of W. Lancaster Road and N. Vernon J. Baker Blvd for an injury crash. It was reported a vehicle struck a bicyclist in the roadway. On scene, deputies and members of the Northern Lakes Fire Department provided medical attention to the bicyclist, who was eventually transported to Kootenai Health for a higher level of care. The male, 83 year old Ernest V. Miller of Hayden, was later pronounced deceased.

The KCSO Traffic Unit responded to the scene to take over the investigation. Based on evidence collected and witness’ statements, it appeared Miller was riding his bicycle southbound on Vernon J. Baker, and failed to stop for the posted stop sign. A vehicle traveling westbound struck Miller.

The investigation is still ongoing, however, impairment and speed does not appear to be a factor.
