LC Baseball Sweeps EOU to Open Series

LEWISTON – Second-ranked Warrior Baseball opened the weekend with a twin-bill sweep of Eastern Oregon at Harris Field on Saturday. LC State took game one 9-2 before ending the nightcap in seven innings by a final of 13-3.

GAME ONE: No. 2 LC State def. Eastern Oregon 9-2

EOU struck first with its first home run of the season. Joey Freitas pulled a ball just over the wall in left to put the Mountaineers up 1-0. Trevin Hope settled in in the second with two strikeouts.

The Warriors put up four runs in the home half of the second to take the lead. Jakob Marquez crushed a two-run homer to put LC in front, and Carter Booth followed with a solo shot to make it 3-1. Back-to-back doubles by Nick Seamons and Isaiah Thomas made it a 4-1 advantage after two innings.

Hope sat the Mounties down in order in the top of the third, and consecutive doubles by Dominic Signorelli and Eric Mast added another run for LC State in the bottom of the inning.

Joe Ball struck out two in the fifth, and EOU made it a 6-2 contest with a run on two hits in the sixth.

LC State added insurance runs with a three-run eighth inning. Seamons got things started with a double, Thomas walked and both moved up on a double steal. A single by Pu’ukani De Sa plated the pair, and a double by Sam Olsson made it 9-2.

Eli Shubert struck out the side in the ninth to end the game.

Seamons, Olsson, Mast and Booth each tallied two hits in the game and De Sa, Marquez and Booth each drove in two runs.

Zachary Ediger earned the win after throwing two innings. Hope fanned four in his four innings, Ball struck out one in two innings and Shubert had three punchouts in his lone frame.

GAME TWO: No. 2 LC State def. Eastern Oregon 13-3 (7 INN.)

The Mounties tallied a pair of runs in the first inning, and LC answered with one in the bottom of the frame. Booth tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Thomas.

EOU added a run in the second and LC State matched it in the third with a fielder’s choice to score Booth.

Jack Sheward opened the home half of the fourth with a double and a single by Leo Rivera put runners on the corners. A wild pitch brought in courtesy runner Jordan Justice to tie things up before Thomas homered to put the Warriors in front 6-3.

Jace Hanson continued his relief outing with two strikeouts in the fifth before the Warriors added on in the bottom of frame. Joe Canty and Sheward singled before a sacrifice bunt by Rivera brought one in. Booth doubled to plate two and De Sa brought in one on a sacrifice fly to keep the inning going.

Jordan Justice drew a walk to load the bases as the Warrior offense continued to add on in the fifth. Signorelli and Canty struck for back-to-back doubles to push the lead to 13-3 through five innings.

Bulla Ephan and Jantzen Lucas ended the game in seven innings with a double play on a strikeout and runner caught stealing.

Booth, Olsson and Sheward each had two hits in the contest and Thomas drove in four runs. Hanson earned the win in relief with four strikeouts through 2.1 innings.

The Warriors wrap up the non-conference series with EOU on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
