TACOMA, Wa. – Three individuals represented LC State Golf at the UPS Spring Invitational in Tacoma over the weekend and all three finished in the top four. Senior Jorgen Lie Viken highlighted the tournament with his second win this week behind an LC State career-low round of 66 on Sunday.
Alexandra Schmidt finished second on the women’s side, and Devon Caruso was four in the men’s tournament.
“Jorgen had a day today,” Head Coach Zach Anderson said. “The greens were in a lot better shape and he took advantage of it. 66 was his best round of the year so far. We came here to compete and all three gave themselves a chance to succeed. Very proud of the way they played.”
Viken was third after a 1-over 72 on Saturday. He carded a 5-under 66 to jump two spots and finish with a two-stroke lead in the 57-person field. The senior totaled 138 in the two rounds.
Schmidt finished one stroke off the lead on Sunday after sitting tied for first after Saturday’s round. The senior shot a 75 on day one before finishing with 79 in the final 18 holes. Her two-day total of 154 was one behind the medalist’s total of 153.
“Alex played solid golf bit just leaked a bit coming in,” Anderson said. “She was competing throughout the tournament and it just didn’t end the way we wanted.”
Caruso moved up five spots to finish fourth overall. The senior shot a 4-over 75 before carding the second-lowest Sunday total, behind Viken, with a 3-under 68 for a two-round total of 143.
“Devon really improved today,” Anderson said. “He capitalized on his chances.”
