LC State’s Men’s Tennis Wins Two in Unique Doubleheader with Whitman

Randy Isbelle | LC State Sports Information Intern

WALLA WALLA – The Lewis-Clark State Men’s Tennis team played a simultaneous doubleheader with NCAA Division III opponent Whitman on Saturday and earned a 5-4 victory in both matches.

“A historic event for both teams as this was the very first time two separate dual matches between two teams were played concurrently,” LC coach Kai Fong said. “This was made possible with Whitman having six outdoor courts and four indoor courts.”

The two victories improved the Warriors record to 10-12 on the season.

MATCH ONE: LC State def. Whitman 5-4

LC secured wins in the top four singles matches to lock up a narrow victory. Declan Townsend and Cade Edwards won in No. 2 doubles over Harshvardhan Chopra and Lucas Huang 8-4 to earn the only doubles point of the match for the Warriors.

“It’s been a while since we have beaten Whitman in Walla Walla, let alone beating them four times this year,” Fong said. “They have been a top contender in their conference for two decades under Coach Northam.”

Dan Felker rolled in No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2 over Chopra while Townsend took a victory over Diego Guzman in No. 2 doubles 6-3, 6-2.

Edwards dropped only two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Huang in No. 3 singles while Itaru Kikuchi won in No. 4 singles over Noah Baker 6-2, 6-3.

MATCH TWO: LC State def. Whitman 5-4

Doubles were key to the LC State success in the second match. The Warriors were outscored 4-2 in singles but swept the doubles competition to eke out a victory.

“It was good to see us sweep the doubles in one of duals,” Fong said. “That made a difference in winning 5-4 in the (Division III) nine-point scoring format. If we had used the NAIA scoring, Whitman would have won that match 4-3.”

Austin Swing and Malte Sommer earned a win in No. 1 doubles over Luca Viarengo and Jackson Wurzer 8-6. Alvaro Camino and Andy Wu teamed up for a victory in No. 2 doubles while Cornelius Sia and Thomas Schaap were victorious in No 3. Doubles.

Sommer earned a straight set victory over Charles Rush in No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-4 and Camino sealed the victory with a three-set win over Gunnar Wollar in No. 4 singles 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.
