Lewiston Civic Theatre presents Matilda Jr. starting July 21

Lewiston, ID- Lewiston’s street will be filled by the smell of rebellion when Lewiston Civic Theatre’s Acting Out Youth Program presents Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical JR. Based on the beloved book “Matilda” by Roald Dahl and adapted from the award-winning full-length musical, Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical JR. tells the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.

Lewiston Civic Theatre Acting Out Youth Company presents Matilda the Musical Jr. directed by Amy Baker Stout and features 105 incredibly talented kids, ages 8 to 17.

The show is double cast between the “Naughty” Cast performing on July 21, 28 at 7 PM and 22, 29 at 2 PM and the “Revolting” Cast performing on 22, 29 @ 7 PM and 23, 30 @ 2 PM, at the Normal Hill Campus (Old LHS Campus), 1114 9th Ave, in Lewiston. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit our website at lctheatre.org.

Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical JR. is adapted from the full-length musical which was based on the book by Roald Dahl, and features a book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. The show opened on the West End in 2011 and made its Broadway premiere in 2013. The musical earned seven Olivier Awards, including “Best New Musical,” and five Tony awards, including The Tony for “Best Book of a Musical.”

Director Amy Baker Stout shares, “After the success of Newsies, Jr, last summer, we were all so excited to be back to camp with Matilda Jr., and apparently so was the rest of the Valley, since our camp went from 61 in Newsies to a completely full camp at 105 students and a waiting list.  It is thrilling to see so many young people and their families hungry for theater in our community. These kids are the future of our artistic community, and the future is bright! You don’t want to miss these performances, the talent is through the roof, and you will forget you are watching a youth performance, it’s just amazing!”

Matilda, a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers, lives with cruel parents who find her to be a nuisance, a lousy little worm, and a bore. When Matilda enters her first term at school, she captures the attention of Miss Honey, a kind teacher, and the two form a wonderful friendship. Unfortunately, the school is ruled by a tempestuous and mean headmistress named Miss Trunchbull, who hates children and delivers cruel and unjust punishments to all her charges. Matilda is determined to change her story, but will her cleverness and courage be enough to withstand the reign of Miss Trunchbull?

Lewiston Civic Theatre’s Production of Matilda Jr.  is made possible by our Sponsors Advantage Advertising, Grocery Outlet, Inland 360, Clearwater Paper, Tendercare Children’s Center, Jennifer Kaufman, ARNP, Mike’s Mechanical, Century 21 Price Right, & P1FCU. All programming at the Lewiston Civic Theatre is made possible through the generous support of the City of Lewiston.

Founded in 1964, the Lewiston Civic Theatre shows originally played at the Porthouse in downtown Lewiston. The Porthouse no longer stands, due to constant water damage from the tides of the Snake River, which were known to flood —but not cancel— a show. As LCT survived those tides, so has it survived the search for a new home. While the performance spaces have changed throughout the years, time and time again, the always resilient Lewiston Civic Theatre has proven that theater is the people that create it, not the building that houses it.  Currently, season productions are performed at the former Lewiston High School Auditorium (1114 9th Ave, Lewiston, ID 83501, also known as the Normal Hill Campus) in special arrangement with the Lewiston Independent School District.

The Lewiston Civic Theatre (Nancy McIntosh, Executive Director) is committed to be a creative home for actors, directors, and designers to collaborate and enrich the cultural life of the LC Valley and surrounding areas. We are an inclusive organization that welcomes and encourages participation and volunteers from all of our community at large.

Lewiston Civic Theatre is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization that offers theatrical productions and theater education opportunities year-round.
