Lewiston Civic Theatre’s Youth Acting Out Program Presents Shrek the Musical, Jr.

Release from the Lewiston Civic Theatre
July 5, 2024

LEWISTON – The Lewiston Civic Theatre’s Youth Acting Out program is proud to announce their upcoming production of Shrek the Musical, Jr.  This highly anticipated show will showcase the incredible talent of the young performers in two separate sessions of the youth summer theater camp. With performances scheduled for July 12-14 and July 26-28, audiences will have the opportunity to witness two entirely different and fantastic casts bring this beloved story to life. Shrek Jr. will perform at the Normal Hill Campus (Former Lewiston High School Auditorium) 1114 Ninth Ave, Lewiston, ID.

The family-friendly musical comedy follows the adventures of an ogre named Shrek who sets off on a quest to save a princess from a dragon. However, it turns out that to ultimately succeed, Shrek must battle an even bigger obstacle: learning how to believe in himself and open his heart to others.

Shrek the Musical Jr. follows an ogre named Shrek who has learned the hard way that “people hate the things they cannot understand.” For many years he has protected himself from the hurtful actions of those who are scared of him by living as a recluse in a cozy cesspit. One day, his peaceful swamp is disturbed by new tenants: fairytale misfits — including Pinocchio, the Ugly Duckling, the Wicked Witch, Peter Pan, the Three Pigs, and the Big Bad Wolf — have been banished there by the villainous Lord Farquaad. In order to gain back his land, Shrek makes a deal with Farquaad to rescue the feisty princess Fiona from a tower guarded by a fierce dragon. Setting off with his faithful companion, Donkey, Shrek begins the journey of a lifetime filled with adventure, romance, and hilarity.

With music by Jeanine Tesori, book, and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, Shrek The Musical is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and the book Shrek by William Steig. The original Broadway production, starring Brian d’Arcy James as Shrek and Sutton Foster as Fiona, ran for twelve months and received a total of twelve Drama Desk Awards and eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.

Due to the increasing number of students participating in the program, the Lewiston Civic Theatre has expanded its youth summer theater camp to offer two sessions. Director Amy Baker Stout says, “I am blown away by the abundance of incredibly talented young people in this valley!  You have to see it at least twice so you can see the casts of both sessions of camp.  You will be so glad you did. It’s fun to see how two casts can create such unique and equally wonderful interpretations of the same show.

Session 1, performing from July 12-14, will be led by the talented Jonson Brotnov in the role of Shrek. Alexandra Brinegar will captivate audiences as Princess Fiona, while Jalen Brotnov takes on the role of the lovable Donkey.

Performances of Shrek the Musical, Jr. will take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 pm, as well as Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm. Please note that there will be no shows scheduled for July 19-21.

This production promises to be an unforgettable experience for audiences of all ages. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the extraordinary talent of these young performers as they transport you to the whimsical world of Shrek. Tickets are available for purchase at www.lctheatre.org.
