Lewiston, ID- Mayor Daniel Johnson has declared a local disaster emergency following the widespread flooding that struck the city on Friday, June 9, 2023.

This declaration has been issued in response to the hazardous conditions created by the widespread flooding that occurred, which continues to present a significant risk to the safety, well-being, and ongoing flood recovery efforts of all citizens. Nez Perce County Chairman, Don Beck, has also signed a Disaster Declaration in support of the City’s efforts in recovering from the widespread flooding.

The flash flood, classified as a rare 50-year event, occurred on June 9th, 2023, when an intense thunderstorm unleashed a deluge of rain, exceeding half an inch within a mere ten minutes. The consequences were immediate and severe, as roads and public infrastructure suffered substantial damage, impeding transportation and causing road closures. Furthermore, copious amounts of debris flooded roadways and drainage systems throughout the city. The city continues to assess the severity of the damage to public infrastructure and identify immediate needs.

Numerous residential, commercial, and public properties, including critical infrastructure, have suffered significant damage or have been completely destroyed as a result of this devastating flooding. Swift action is imperative to mitigate further losses and initiate the recovery process.

The purpose of this action is to activate the response and recovery aspects of all applicable local disaster emergency plans and enable the provision of aid.
