Men’s Basketball Garners NABC Academic Recognition

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Three Warrior Men’s Basketball student-athletes, as well as the LC State Men’s Basketball team, earned NABC academic honors, announced by the National Association of Basketball Coaches on Tuesday. Al Sommerfield, Grant Ellison and Kai Warren were all named to the NABC Honors Court, while the team earned the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award.

“Very proud of our team and how they handled themselves in the classroom this past year,” Head Coach Austin Johnson said. “Our goal is to compete in everything we do and that certainly extends into the classroom. We are very fortunate to have such quality student-athletes that are serious about their degrees.”

Sommerfield, Ellison and Warren were each named to the Honors Court for the first time in their careers. The award goes to student-athletes that are at least a junior in standing and maintain a GPA of 3.2 or higher.

As a team, the Warriors qualified for the Team Academic Excellence Award with a team GPA of 3.12. LC had 13 student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or higher, seven with at least a 3.5 and one had a 4.0. In order to earn the honor, a team must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the 2021-22 season.
