Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests Invites Applications For Community Gear Library Grants

Release from USDA Forest Service
May 19, 2024

KAMIAH — The USDA Forest Service and the Next 100 Coalition have joined together to invite eligible organizations to submit proposals for the National Forest Community Recreation Fund, a new pilot aimed at supporting new or existing gear libraries in communities on or near national forest lands. The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests are encouraging any interested community organizations to apply for this funding.

“As someone whose own deep appreciation and enjoyment of the outdoors was made possible by similar programs, and growing up in an impoverished community, I truly value the importance of  programs like this ,” said acting Recreation Program Manager, Micah Miller.  “This program can bolster access to the outdoors, gearing-up Idahoans of all backgrounds to experience  special places on our Forests,” Miller explained.

Any 501(c)(3) organization, Tribe or Tribal organization, or business working to advance outdoor recreation and/or increasing access to Forest Service lands is eligible to apply by June 30, 2024.

Applicants do not need to currently operate an existing gear library but must demonstrate an intent to develop or strengthen a partnership with the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests.

Eligible expenses to be covered under this program include but are not limited to proposals seeking support for new or replacement of gear or equipment, an enhancement to an existing library program, monthly storage costs, partnerships with outfitters and guides, and many more.

Funding will range from $0 – $50,000 per award for work occurring between Sept. 1, 2024, and Sept. 1, 2025. Applicants are limited to one application.
