LEWISON – On Thursday, July 14 at about 7:50 p.m. the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office and Rescue Dive Team responded to the south side of the Memorial Bridge where a Lewiston resident, 57-year-old Wayne Kirtley Jr., went underwater and did not resurface.
The Clarkston Fire Department marine unit also responded with a rescue boat. The Rescue Teams searched for Kirtley until dark with no success.
On July 15 The Nez Perce County Sheriff’s dive team was able to locate Kirtley’s body in about 14 feet of water approximately 50 yards from the shoreline.
They would like to remind the public to use caution when swimming in the rivers in the area. The waters around the region are still high with the mountain snow runoff and still cold.
The temperature of the Clearwater River near the Memorial Bridge is currently about 56 degrees.
